Michele Smith has served as Alderman of the 43rd Ward since May of 2011, continuing her commitment to public service from when she began her career as a federal prosecutor in the United States Attorney’s Office. While serving there, she prosecuted over 400 narcotics, white-collar, and political corruption cases, including a former Illinois state representative and other City and County employees. She also shut down the largest securities fraud “boiler room” in the United States, convicting over 20 defendants.Michele has lived in Lincoln Park since 1979, raising her family here as a working mother. A former Girl Scout troop leader, Michele is now a proud grandmother.
After leaving the U.S. Attorney’s Office, she worked for Navistar International Corporation, a Fortune 500 corporation, eventually becoming the General Counsel for one of their subsidiary firms. While there, she partnered with environmental and industry groups to change the Clean Air Act to reduce diesel emissions to near zero.
In addition to working as a full-time alderman, Michele also consults for a non-profit arts foundation.
Michele Smith works closely with ward residents, businesses and civic leaders to promote an open and transparent City government and to develop innovative solutions to addressing longstanding problems in our ward.
